Mexico City - officially Ciudad de Mexico (CDMX) - is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the Western Hemisphere, with over 21 million people in the greater metro region. Built on the ruins of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, the city sits in a high-altitude valley at 2,240 metres above sea level, surrounded by volcanic mountains including Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
The city holds over 150 museums - more than any other city in the Americas - ranging from the world-class Museo Nacional de Antropologia to the intimate Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Azul) in Coyoacan. Street food is a way of life here: taco stands, tamale carts, and elote vendors line almost every block, with prices starting at 20 MXN for a plate of tacos.
Mexico City's metro system is one of the cheapest in the world at 5 MXN per ride, and the Metrobus rapid transit network covers major corridors. Neighbourhoods like Roma Norte, Condesa, Coyoacan, and the Historic Centre each have distinct personalities and are best explored on foot. The climate is spring-like for much of the year, with daytime temperatures hovering between 20 and 26 degrees C, though afternoon rain is common from June to October.
