Cappadocia is a historical region in central Anatolia, defined by a volcanic landscape of soft tuff rock that wind and water have eroded into fairy chimneys, valleys, and pinnacles. The area covers parts of Nevsehir, Aksaray, Kayseri, Kirsehir, Sivas, and Nigde provinces, but most travel centres on Goreme village and the towns of Urgup, Uchisar, and Avanos.
Early Christians carved monasteries, churches, and entire underground cities into the rock between the 4th and 13th centuries, leaving frescoes that survive today. Cappadocia is reached via Nevsehir Cappadocia Airport (NAV) or the larger Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR), both 45-90 minutes by transfer. Hot air balloons launch most mornings at dawn over the valleys.
