The Czech Republic occupies the heart of Central Europe, landlocked between Germany, Austria, Poland, and Slovakia. Its capital Prague draws the majority of international visitors, but the country extends well beyond one city. Bohemia in the west is defined by rolling hills, spa towns like Karlovy Vary and Marianske Lazne, and a beer-brewing tradition that predates the industrial era. Moravia to the east is wine country, with a landscape of vineyards, Renaissance chateaux, and the lively university city of Brno. The Czech Republic has 16 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the historic centres of Prague, Cesky Krumlov, and Telc. The currency is the Czech Koruna (CZK), and while the country is an EU member it has not adopted the euro. Costs remain lower than in Western Europe, making it a strong choice for travellers seeking quality architecture, food, and culture without high prices.

Czech Republic Travel FAQ

EU and EEA citizens can enter freely with a valid ID card or passport. Citizens of countries like the US, Canada, Australia, and the UK can stay visa-free for up to 90 days within a 180-day period under Schengen rules. From 2026, visa-exempt non-EU visitors will need an approved ETIAS travel authorisation (EUR 7, valid for three years) before arriving.

Spring (April to May) and early autumn (September to October) offer the best balance of mild weather, manageable crowds, and lower prices. Prague's summer months of July and August are warm but extremely busy with tourists. Winter brings Christmas markets and a dusting of snow on castles, though temperatures frequently drop below freezing.

The Czech Republic is very safe for tourists. Violent crime is rare and Prague scores well on international safety indices. The main risk is pickpocketing in crowded tourist areas like Old Town Square, Charles Bridge, and on public transport. Keep valuables in front pockets or zipped bags, and watch out for common scams like overcharging in restaurants or unlicensed taxi drivers.

The Czech Koruna (CZK) is the official currency. While some tourist-oriented shops accept euros, the exchange rate they offer is poor - always pay in CZK for the best value. ATMs are widely available and offer better rates than currency exchange booths, especially those labelled "Change" in tourist zones which often charge commissions above 10 percent.

Czech Railways (CD) and RegioJet operate frequent, affordable train connections between Prague, Brno, Karlovy Vary, and Cesky Krumlov. FlixBus and RegioJet buses cover routes not served by rail. Within cities, Prague has an excellent metro, tram, and bus network. Car hire is useful for exploring Bohemian countryside castles and Moravian wine villages, with well-maintained motorways and secondary roads.
