Rome is Italy's capital and one of the most storied cities in the world, layered with nearly three thousand years of history. Ancient ruins, Renaissance palaces, baroque fountains, and lively piazzas sit shoulder to shoulder across a compact, walkable centre that rewards slow exploration.
From the Colosseum and Roman Forum to St Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums, Rome's monuments anchor the city, while neighbourhoods such as Trastevere, Monti, and Testaccio give it everyday character. Add legendary food, sunny weather, and easy onward connections across Italy, and Rome works equally well as a long weekend break or the centrepiece of a longer trip.

Rome Destination FAQ
The best time to visit Rome is in spring (April to early June) and autumn (September to October), when temperatures are mild and the city is less crowded than in peak summer. July and August are hot, often above 30°C, and many locals leave for the coast, but Rome remains busy with tourists. Winter is quiet and atmospheric, with cooler weather, fewer queues at major sights, and lower hotel prices.
From Fiumicino Airport (FCO), the Leonardo Express train runs non-stop to Roma Termini in about 30 minutes and is the fastest option for most travellers. Cheaper regional trains and shuttle buses also serve Termini and other stations, while a fixed-price taxi to the historic centre is around €50. From Ciampino Airport (CIA), the easiest options are shuttle buses to Termini (around 40 minutes) or a taxi at a fixed fare of about €31 to the city walls.
The best way to get around central Rome is on foot, since most major sights cluster within a walkable historic core. For longer distances, the Metro (lines A, B, and C) is fast for routes like Termini to the Vatican or Colosseum, while buses and trams fill in the gaps. You do not need a car in Rome, and traffic plus restricted ZTL zones in the centre make driving more hassle than it is worth.
Plan for at least three full days in Rome to see the headline sights without rushing. Three days lets you cover the Colosseum and Roman Forum, the Vatican Museums and St Peter's Basilica, and the historic centre around the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and Piazza Navona. Four to five days is ideal if you want to add neighbourhoods like Trastevere, museums such as the Galleria Borghese, or a day trip to Tivoli or Ostia Antica.
Rome is generally a safe city for tourists, with very low rates of violent crime against visitors. The main risk is petty theft, particularly pickpocketing on crowded buses (notably the 64 to the Vatican), at major sights like the Colosseum and Termini station, and in busy nightlife areas. Keep valuables out of back pockets, use a zipped bag in front of you in crowds, and you can comfortably explore most central neighbourhoods day or night.
Rome's most popular neighbourhoods for visitors are the Centro Storico, Trastevere, Monti, Prati, and Testaccio. The Centro Storico around the Pantheon and Piazza Navona puts you steps from major sights, while Trastevere across the Tiber is famous for cobbled lanes, restaurants, and nightlife. Monti, behind the Colosseum, blends boutiques and wine bars with an authentic local feel; Prati is the elegant district next to the Vatican; and Testaccio is the foodie quarter loved for its market and traditional Roman trattorias.
The best day trips from Rome combine ancient sites and scenic countryside, all reachable in under an hour or two. Top picks include Tivoli for Hadrian's Villa and the gardens of Villa d'Este, Ostia Antica for one of the most complete Roman archaeological sites in Italy, and the Castelli Romani hill towns for wine and lake views. Florence and Naples are both reachable in around an hour and a half by high-speed train, making them feasible long day trips as well.
